Brooklyn-based, punk rockers TVOD are releasing their debut album Party Time on 9th May on Mothland (La Sécurité, Yoo Doo Right, Truck Violence, Hot Garbage etc). The 6-piece deliver emotionally charged lyrics over eclectic, infectious, minimalistic melodies, seamlessly blending post-punk, egg punk and krautrock.
The brainchild of singer-songwriter Tyler Wright, the project draws from personal and external inspirations. His vivid storytelling paints a gritty tongue-in-cheek picture of being a D.I.Y. artist grinding it out in NYC, complete with fabled tales about the degenerate lifestyle and the good and bad which accompany it. Building on their previous releases, Party Time features Wright’s uncanny melodic sense and lovingly cranky approach to song-writing, complimented by dynamic guitar riffs alongside lush synthesizer layers that elevate the rhythm section’s post-punk grooves.
Perhaps their most organic work to date, Party Time was recorded live off-the-floor, celebrating TVOD’s genuine comradery in printing a full reel of clever unabashed punk music. Lured in by the producer duo of Félix Bélisle and Samuel Gemme – Tyler Wright (vocals), along with bandmates Mem Pahl (drums & synthesizers), Micki Piccirillo (bass), Jenna Mark (vocals & synthesizers), Serge Zbrizher (guitar), and Denim Casimir (guitar), drove up to Montréal, Québec, to record at Gamma Recording Studio (Corridor, Population II, La Sécurité). The resulting 11-song essay promises a visceral listening experience, filled with chaotic emotions and sharp humour, capturing the essence of TVOD’s unique sound.
Although the title might suggest otherwise, Party Time depicts the bittersweet realities of the Big Apple’s nightlife through blatantly candid commentary, leading to poignant and highly-relatable songs. While grungy rock & roll aficionados will no doubt get their fix along the way, they will shiver to the tune of heart-wrenching tales of deceit, addiction and disbelief, as much as they will grin in connivance as they become more and more acquainted with TVOD’s sordid humour and charismatic storytelling.
The songs on the album span the band’s history, most being written in the past year, a collaborative effort from the whole band, while songs like “MUD” and “Wells Fargo” go back to the very beginning, when it was just Tyler. “It’s definitely a party-themed album, with a lot of nods to our more light-hearted late nights, but it leans into the darkness of depression, isolation and addiction that partying can bring. Going through heartbreaks, using partying as a way to cope, whether it’s in a positive or a negative way, is up to interpretation.” explain the band. “The album has a lot of chaotic feelings of melancholy, nostalgia, longing, pain, euphoria, and self-reflection. In short, it’s hangxiety-induced punk to dance or mosh to. Like taking a shot of tequila and doing cardio.”
TVOD bloomed into existence in 2019 via a high-energy cassette full of punk songs recorded by Wright on a Tascam 4-track tape recorder in the basement of a D.I.Y. space he was living in. Since then, the band independently released two EPs – Daisy (2020) and Victory Garden (2021) – along with singles “Alien”, “Mantis”, “Goldfish”, and “Poppies”, as well as two limited run 45’s.
Known for their raw, unapologetic and unpredictable stage performances, the 6-piece have extensively toured the US, Canada and Europe, performing at major festivals like SXSW, Hopscotch, Sled Island, End of the Road, and Les Trans de Rennes, all the while sharing the stage with acts like Warmduscher, Snõõper, Gustaf, Civic, Soul Glo, Balkans, and Iguana Death Cult.
TVOD will be playing at SXSW this March, and then coming over to the UK in May for The Great Escape. They’ll be returning to the UK in August to play End of the Road festival. More UK shows to be announced shortly.
