Signalling his euphoric return to the dancefloor, iconic Portland songwriter, producer, filmmaker, television personality and activist, Logan Lynn is releasing his new album New Money, on 21st January 2022 via the legendary Kill Rock Stars.
Returning to his electro-pop roots after collaborations with 80’s pop star Tiffany, The Dandy Warhols and Styrofoam, New Money is Logan’s tenth studio album, but first for Kill Rock Stars. Produced in collaboration with long-time co-writer Gino Mari and written at home over the course of 2020, the album is a nine song testament to queer power, gay joy, and the belief that we will someday come back together, at shows and on the dance floor.
The record finds Logan exploring themes of life in the face of suffering, Covid loneliness, and existential danger on “It’s Been Forever” (“This is the growing edge, This is the dark part in between…oh God, it’s been forever since we were together”) and “Is There Anyone Else Like This In The World?” (“The truth is the truth and I want you to know that I want you to find somewhere safe and warm, away from home”), and navigating long-term addiction recovery on “Sit and Spin” (“Well mama told me there’d be days like this but no one warned me that the nights are even harder …Pump me full of whatever you’ve found, I’ll find a way back to love”).
The album features Lynn lampooning New Portland, calling out gentrification and Portlandia on “Fight or Flight” (“We built this town on rock and roll and we’ll burn it down when the decade’s over…Make it into something beautiful, then ruin it with a TV show.”), and wrestling with the concept of success and material emptiness on “Rich and Beautiful” (“Repping Gucci, dripping Tiffany…Oh, I wanna be rich and beautiful”), while documenting his experiences of surviving his own vices during the global pandemic on “Eat&Drink&Smoke&Shop&Fuck.” (“I’m all kinds of terrible, too…I just wanna drink and smoke and shop and fuck it up.”). New Money finds the veteran songwriter honoring his all-time musical heroes Liz Phair on “Fuck and Run” and Elliott Smith on “Baby Britain”, with new interpretations of their songs. On album closer, “Here’s To Us”, Lynn sings about redemption and loss (“Life knocks you around and makes fools from the highest ground, it pulls you under and whirls you about.”)
